Letter from the President
The Swedish Orthopaedic Association trancends back to 1944 as Swedens professional organization for orthopaedic surgeons. It is linked to the Swedish Society of Medicine and the Swedish Medical Association. The main focus of the Swedish Orthopaedic Association is to support postgraduate education, continuous professional development as well as research and quality improvement in the field of orthopaedics and traumatology. The Swedish Orthopaedic Association has several affiliated associations and societies representing mainly subspecialities in the field of orthopaedics and traumatology. Epiphysen is Another important affiliated association. It organizes orthopaedic residents and has a representative in the board of the Swedish Orthopaedic Association.
Important activities include the Swedish national board examination, promoting the best PhD thesis in the field of orthopaedics and traumatology, organizing an annual scientific meeting focused on education and research. Numerous activities and projects aiming at continuous quality improvement are managed and governed by the Swedish Orthopaedic Association. Governance of residency programs, scholarships for research and international exchange, combatting prosthetic infections, life style changes to improve surgical results, support to national endorsed quality registers, courses and specific Projects in patient safety and leadership courses for the next generation of orthopaedic leaders and managers are examples of such activities and projects. We use our own journal (Ortopediskt Magasin), to discuss questions of orthopedic relevance and to highlight evidence based treatments within orthopaedics.
The Swedish Orthopaedic Association is a member of the European Federation of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT) and the Nordic Orthopaedic Federation (NOF) who owns the scientific journal Acta Orthopaedica. The Swedish Orthopaedic Association is a member of the Orthopaedic Section in the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) and the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EBOT).
The Swedish Orhopaedic Association aims at providing patients with the highest standards of evidence based care in orthopaedics and traumatology taking into consideration the Helsinki declaration, ethics and transparency.
